Need to distribute your home videos on something less bulky than VHS tapes?

Welcome to Subhash VCDPlayer! Subhash VCDPlayer is a free media player with support for VCD playback, image capture, and transcription. Apart from Video CDs (VCDs), it can also play regular audio and video files in formats that are compatible with Windows Media Player 6.4, such as wave, MP3, midi (mid), MPEG (mpg), AVI, ASF, Windows Media Audio/Video (WMA/WMV) and DivX/XviD (codec required).

The best-loved feature of the player is its ability to capture still images from video files and VCDs and save them in bitmap (BMP) files. Captured images can be automatically set as the desktop background (wallpaper), allowing you to preview the images the same moment the images are captured. The contents of the download file can be placed on VCDs to create autorun-enabled VCDs. which makes it easy for you to distribute your home videos on ordinary CD ROM discs rather than on high-mortality VHS tapes.

To play a VCD, insert the CD into your CD drive and start the program. It will automatically search the CD and start playing the DAT files without any further intervention. When the program is running, it does not show up on the taskbar. Instead, it is accessible from an icon in the system tray. (See the above screenshot.)

Subhash VCDPlayer uses Window Media Player 6.4 under the hood, which gives it rock-solid stability. Unlike other such programs, Subhash VCDPlayer takes WMP to surreal heights of functionality and ease of use. This has been made possible by borrowing a few ideas from IrfanView (file browsing), Winamp (system tray icon capabilities) and CyberLink PowerPlayer (single-key keyboard shortcuts and still-image capture), and combining them with a slew of unique features of its own. Hyped up, you can call it Windows Media Player On Steroids.

The program can also be used as a wave player by professional transcriptionists to create transcripts of recorded audio and video files (dictations and conversations). There is no need for a foot pedal as playback can be controlled via rewired function keys on the keyboard.

The player comes with a set of 16 cool file/system tray icons. It also has a boss key, which removes all traces of the program from the desktop but lets you get back right on when the danger has passed. You can control the speed of the file playback with 19 decrements and 24 increments of 5% of the original playback speed. Please read the help file for full instructions.

After you download the file, first extract the contents of the download file to your hard disc. (If you try to run the installer file directly from the WinZIP window, it will not run and you will only get an error message.)

Next, double-click on the INSTALL.EXE file (in the VCDPLAYER\WIN folder) and follow the instructions on the screen.

Introduction

The search pane of Internet Explorer (IE) by default uses the MSN search engine. If you install the Yahoo! toolbar or Google toolbar, the search pane will use the Yahoo! or Google search engine respectively. However, you are still limited to using just one search engine at a time. Because of this, the search pane has been was one of IE's least exploited features. Well, until now.

Search Heaven is NOT A SOFTWARE. It is a regular webpage, except that it is loaded in the search pane of Internet Explorer. To make Internet Explorer use the Search Heaven search page, you need to perform a registry tweak. For this,

1. download Seach_Heaven.zip (0.002 MB) and extract its contents to your hard disk
2. run the Enable_Search_Heaven.reg file by right-clicking it and selecting the Merge option from the context menu.

Uninstallation

To disable the Search Heaven tweak, simply run the Disable_Search_Heaven.reg file (provided in the Search_Heaven.zip file).

If you want to first see how Search Heaven works, click here. If you use a non-IE browser such as Netscape, Opera, or Firefox, then try the "frames" version of Search Heaven. Search Heaven is free and carries no advertisements.

FURTHER HACKING FOR PROGRAMMERS

The CMES??.htm files contain Javascript. The SCRIPT tags use the DEFER attribute. Menu extensions are enabled by adding certain keys (contained in the Install_CMES.reg) to the Windows Registry. The keys are added at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt\. The names of the keys are same as displayed in the context menu. The Default value should contain a string referring the path to the Javascript routine. The Contexts value should contain any one of the following binary values.

• For default appearance - 0x1
• For images - 0x2
• For controls - 0x4
• For tables - 0x8
• For selected text - 0x10
• For hyperlinks - 0x20

Empowerment (Comes With AK-47s)

Empowerment is dedicated to a former colleague of mine who I remember always had her desk festooned with an unbelievable amount of dolls and, strangely, feminist propaganda. I was particularly attracted to one quote, which went something like this: "If you can't convince them, confuse them." Inspired, I have created a wallpaper that I hope would appeal to the likes of her. Other Features

Empowerment also features a calendar of January 2007 with holidays marked in special color. (You can use Paint†, Paint .NET, Photoshop or some other image-editing software to add your own calender, holidays and appointments.) Staying faithful to the theme, the wallpaper uses only military fatigues olive-green colors set against a Gothic black background.
